Japan and the languages of Japan have been, from time memorial, on the cross-roads of migrations and trades of the maritime and central east Asia; therefore, the etymological composition of the Japonic languages is extremely complex.  It includes the loan-words and grammatical elements from various languages in these areas, which are introduced below along with the leading specialists on the history of these languages.
